About Trauma
Start Today Counseling prides itself on providing trauma-informed counseling services. We work to cultivate an environment where each client feels safe, supportive, and moves at a pace that is right for you.
The American Psychological Association defines trauma as “any disturbing experience that results in significant fear, helplessness, dissociation, confusion, or other disruptive feelings intense enough to have a long-lasting negative effect on a person’s attitudes, behavior, and other aspects of functioning. Traumatic events include those caused by human behavior as well as by nature and often challenge an individual’s view of the world as a just, safe, and predictable place.”
Anxiety can look like:
- Feeling hypervigilant or “on-edge”
- Panic
- Dissociation (not being fully “present”, feeling “out of body” or like things around you are surreal or dreamlike)
- Flashbacks to traumatic events
- Intrusive images or memories
- Difficulty remembering parts of the experience
- Frequent nightmares or insomnia
- Feeling disconnected or alienated by others
- Reckless or impulsive behavior
- Avoidance of things that remind you of the trauma
- Being “triggered” by things that remind you of the trauma
Together we can work towards helping you heal from past trauma so that it no longer controls your life. Evidence-based modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Attachment Theory, and mindfulness-based approaches are utilized to ensure you are receiving the most appropriate and effective treatment.
